I Bought a Sewing Machine!

I love to decorate but I have always felt like I was missing my true calling...sewing.  I love the detail, measuring, calculating and precision needed to sew.  My personality is all about accuracy so sewing was made for me.  And if you know anything about me you also know that I am full of crap right now!  All those things I just listed are exactly why I don't sew!  So what in the heck am I talking about?  Well...I did buy a sewing machine.

My husband and I have been on the hunt for bedside tables for awhile now and the other day we were at our favorite antique shop helping my mom pick out a trunk / coffee table for her new apartment (which is looking fab, by the way) and we saw the perfect thing...

Gorgeous, right!  But when my husband went to open the "drawers" to make sure they worked we realized they weren't drawers at all.  It was a door hiding this...

A fully working World's Rotary sewing machine!

How cool is that!  It was priced at $60 and we just couldn't pass it up.  It is the perfect height and width for the space and if we get the urge to make a pillow in the middle of the night we just have to roll over and sew away!

The machine is beautiful.  It has amazing detail work that modern sewing machines forgo for all the fancy functions.

And the cabinet itself is also great.  I have to say I'm pretty excited with our find!  Now we just need to carry it up the last flight of stairs to our bedroom.  That thing is heavy!

Photographing Your Home

I am not a professional by any means but photography is something I have always loved.  I not only love to take pictures but I love to fill my home with them.  So I thought I would share a few tips for taking great pics of your home and all the things you love in it!

My first tip is turn OFF the flash.  The most important thing to creating a great photograph is color (even if you are working in black & white) and the color is effected greatly by the light.  In my personal opinion, a flash ruins the natural essence of the light.  So if possible take your pictures during the day when you can make use of the natural light and if they still come out a little on the dark side you can fix that later.   Here is an example.  I took this first picture with the flash and the second without.  The second pic is much more natural, I think. (Pause for "awww what a cute doggie" moment).

Next...Get Low and Get Close.  I take most pictures sitting on the floor.  I find this perspective allows the viewer to feel like they are part of the environment rather then looking at a photo from outside the experience.  Here, check it out.  I took this picture while standing...

And this picture from the floor.

And now that you are on the floor Get Close.  You can do this with a good lens or skip the fancy and just scoot in closer!

Framing a picture is also very important.  We tend to only focus on the subject when we snap a shot but before taking that pic also look at the edges of the picture.  What is that hiding just to the right?  What is at the top of the frame?

Now this can also all be done when you edit your pictures which takes me to my next subject...yup you guessed it Editing!  All the pics above came straight from my camera, no editing.  I am not the one to spend hours editing and cropping and airbrushing my photos but I do believe that a simple, easy to use editing program is a must.  There are many great ones out there but my current drink of choice is Picnik.  All the basic effects are free and if you want to upgrade the cost is minimal.  It is so easy to use and a great place to start if you have never edited your photos before.  Let me show you some examples!

The first thing I always do is crop a photo to clean up the edges (as mentioned above) and to draw your eye to what matters.  Here is the pic before it was cropped and after...

Next I used Picnik to modify the color saturation.  I do this to every pic I take.  (I went a little drastic on this one but I wanted you to see the difference it can make.)

Picnik then has some really fun effects you can use to spice things up.  One I often use is "Vignette" which frames the picture in a subtle dark shadow...

I also played around with some more fun effects.  Here is "Cross Process".

And "Orton-ish"

Or even "Neon"

OK, that one was just for fun but there are endless options on Picnik and all the ones I used above are free!  And even if you don't get fancy (or silly) some simple cropping and enhancing the color go a long way.  Try it out!

*Please Note - I was not compensated by Picnik to write this post...unfortunately :)

Blooming Beautifully

My garden is full of the most amazing flowers!  Let me be clear that I take absolutely no credit for this.  The former owners had an amazing eye for all things blooming and we are simply lucky to benefit from it.  Wherever you are out there former owners Thank You!

On most occasions things I plant end up looking like this.

Yes, that is actually in my yard right now as we speak.  I just keep hoping it may spring back to life!  It was a Gerbera Daisy now it is more like a sad reminder of my black thumb.  But...I have had one success this season!  I bought a miniature tomato plant at the amazing Madison Capital Square Farmers Market.  (If you ever have the opportunity to go it is a must.  The best Farmers Market I have ever been to!)

I decided on this plant because the farmer assured me that I could leave it right in the pot and all I had to do was water it a lot.  Now that is something I can do seeing as how I tend to over water everything.  Although I was sceptical it turned out she was right!  Even I can grow tomatoes!

I feel like this picture needs big flashing lights around it.  You have no idea what an accomplishment this is for me!  Maybe I will let it go to my head and next year try and actually plant one in the ground.  (As my husband says...whoa slow down there is plenty of time left for you to kill it.)

6 Months Later

Exactly 6 months ago we moved from our lovely 2 bedroom, furnished (a la rustic ski cabin) temporary housing to our beautiful home. And although not all the decor was (and still is) "us" we felt at home right away.

This is a great house. The location is perfect, right on a nature conservancy that we can run / hike / bike / cross country ski through (and yes, we have done all those things). It looks over a green space which we can pretend is our property but we don't have to take care of it. And our new wonderful Madison friends live 2 doors down (Hi Anna and JD!). And that is only the location...I could go on for hours about everything else we love.

But one more thing I can't pass by...although this house was in perfect move-in condition it is full of projects. Nothing that needs to be done right away but all fun things to take our time with. And even though we are taking our time I feel like we have accomplished a lot in the last 6 months. So in tribute to all our hard and fun work I wanted to take a walk down memory lane. (Is it memory lane after only 6 months?!?!?)

The adventure began in my daughter's room, which looked like this...

And ended up like this!

The Grand Piano Room got some paint...

And don't forget the surprise Master Bedroom Makeover!

My daughter got a new play area...

(This was a lovely pic on move-in day!)

I turned the kitchen table from ordinary to playful...

And had some fun with some projects along the way!

So the snow eventually did melt.  And we are proud to call this house our home.

Happy 6 Month Anniversary To Us!

Getting Started on the Headboard

For months now I have been thinking about building a headboard for our king size bed.  You may remember the sad tale of the end of our old headboard.  Rest in peace old friend.  Ever since this tragedy I have been on the lookout for inspiration.  I considered an upholstered headboard, like the one I made here, but then decided I wanted a more rustic look.  I looked for old doors or window frames but couldn't find just the right thing.  Then last week at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore I was inspired by these old wood base boards...

So I picked up 4 at $1 a piece.  What a steal!  At the time I didn't know what I was going to do with them, but after a few days of starring at them in my garage I thought...what a great start to a headboard!  So that is where I am now, at the start.

As with most projects this is going to be a wait and see kind of thing.  I am going to take it one step at a time and wait and see how it all comes together.  The good thing is I have lots of inspiration to draw from.  My fellow bloggers have come up with amazing designs!  Check some of these beauties out...

All amazing, right!?!  I only hope mine can compare.  So I send myself the Irish Decorators Prayer...may your wood be blessed, may your design be frugal, and may you not have any power tool mishaps...what, you haven't heard that one!
